The Episcopal Cathedral and Diocesan Museum of Mainz

Through the two-storey Gothic cloister of the cathedral you get to the Episcopal Cathedral and Diocesan Museum as well as the adjoined St. Nicholas Chapel where today’s cathedral treasure vault is accommodated. The very location of the museum is in itself a part of its attraction.

Regarded as one of the biggest museums of its kind in Germany the permanent collection comprises sacral works from two millennia of Christian art. The inventory of the museum includes unique artefacts from Mainz cathedral as well as the whole diocese. The objects of a sacred context lost their original liturgical function or cannot remain at their local parishes anymore because of the risk of vandalism, theft and weather-related damage. In unique succession of early, high and late medieval rooms the ecclesiastical artefacts are presented in a worthy context as well as in a chronological appropriate surrounding. The interaction between exhibit and architecture enables the visitors to establish historical connections.

Basement

The tour through one millennium of Christian art starts in the romanesque and gothic vaulted halls. The imposing underground architecture is well worth seeing even by itself. Besides the collection of Early and High middle ages stone sculptures the gothic arches halls houses several unique sculptures from the gothic period - the famous fragments of the former rood screen (around 1240) created by the so called Naumburger Meister show the `Last Judgement´ at the end of time and is a testimony of the height of the archdiocese during the gothic period. Beyond that the fragments are even a remarkable testimony of the medieval faith.

Ground floor

In the former assembly rooms of the cathedral chapter special exhibitions are presented.

Upper floor

The upper storey of the cloister with the late middle ages and modern period departments offers a magnificent view on the south side of the cathedral. At the beginning of the tour it gives a great impression with a triumphal, six-metre-high crucifixion group (1519) from the workshop of Hans Backoffen. On 800 square metres 60 masterpieces of the late middle and modern ages are shown. Among these must be specially mentioned the paintings by the Cranach workshop, a valuable revolving tabernacle by Abraham Roentgen or the Frauenlob monument by Ludwig Michael Schwanthaler.

St. Nicholas Chapel and Sacristy

In the late gothic atmosphere of the St. Nicholas Chapel (15th) the cathedral treasure vault shines with liturgical equipment of ten centuries. Most of the items in the cathedral treasure are consecrated objects that are sometimes used today during the holy mass.
